Department of Genetics
The Department of Genetics at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Balıkesir University, has been operational since 2016. Since its establishment, the department has been actively involved in education, research, and practical applications in the fields of animal genetics and molecular techniques. Our primary objective is to teach the fundamental principles of genetics within veterinary medicine and to foster scientific research in this area in line with international standards. To achieve this goal, we provide both theoretical and practical training at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, equipping students with modern genetic methodologies.
Our Molecular Genetics Research Laboratory performs comprehensive DNA-level analyses. After extracting DNA from various biological samples—such as blood, feathers, and oral mucosa—we carry out analyses using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, and imaging systems. DNA sequencing is performed in collaboration with accredited reference laboratories. With this infrastructure, our department successfully conducts both basic scientific studies and application-oriented projects.
In addition to these core research areas, the department is also actively engaged in forensic veterinary genetics. Studies involving species and individual identification, as well as traceability of genetic material, support forensic investigations and provide expert services to relevant authorities. Moreover, our undergraduate students gain hands-on experience in laboratory work through the TÜBİTAK 2209-A Research Projects Support Program for University Students. This early exposure enables them to reinforce their theoretical knowledge with practical skills and to develop academically in a well-rounded manner.
As the Department of Genetics, we are dedicated to pioneering national and international research in veterinary genetics, guided by scientific excellence and student-centered education. Through our well-equipped laboratory infrastructure, experienced academic staff, and interdisciplinary collaborations, we continue to contribute to animal health and genetic science.
We are currently involved in several research projects supported by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) and the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Unit of Balıkesir University. These projects aim to contribute to the scientific body of knowledge in animal genetics and to lay the groundwork for practical applications in the field. Our main areas of research include:
· Identification of genetic polymorphisms related to meat and milk yield in farm animals
· Molecular diagnosis of hereditary diseases
· Analysis of milk protein variants (e.g., A1/A2 beta-casein)
·
Sex
determination in birds through DNA analysis
·
Genetic
mutation analysis for drug sensitivity in cats and dogs
·
Identification
and typing of pathogenic microorganisms
· Analysis of genomic data using bioinformatics approaches
